A meadow.

Fairy gardens are a great way to get kids outside and doing something different, as well as making your garden look a bit more fun! These miniature gardens consist of small landscapes filled with plants, tiny houses, and trinkets that are designed to attract fairies to your garden. Whether you believe in fairies, or your grandchildren do, making and decorating this fairy garden together will be a lovely memory together.

What you will need:

  • Potting mix
  • A pot
  • Plants, twigs, and flowers
  • Pebbles
  • Mini garden decorations

Make a Plan

First things first: you need to plan out what you want your fairy garden to look like. Do you want it to have the same sort of feel as a forest, or a little cottage in the countryside? Maybe you want to do something completely different for summer and make it look like a little beach? Deciding on what you will need to achieve your vision is the first step, and then collecting the materials is the next. For example: if you want to achieve a forest look, make sure to get lots of leafy plants and some moss. The world is your oyster as far as decoration goes, but planning is key.

Find Your Container

Finding the right pot for you to plant your fairy garden in is very important. Make sure it has drainage holes, as you will be using real plants for this. Any plant pot will work – we have a range on our website which would look lovely as the base for a fairy garden! Make sure your plant pot is big enough to accommodate enough features and plants to build a proper fairy garden.

Building Your Garden

Composted soil full of organic matter and small bark pieces is the best for your fairy garden, and make sure to ensure proper drainage by adding a layer of pea gravel to the bottom of your container. Once the container is filled with soil, make sure to add things like pebbles, bark, or moss to make pathways for the fairies.

Now, move onto the plants. Think about where you’re going to put your fairy garden – will it be indoors or outdoors? In full light or partial light? Make sure to choose plants which will work well in whichever environment you choose, and that aren’t too big, as you don’t want them to take up all the room! Choose different textures and shapes and use your imagination to get the effect you want. Good plants for fairy gardens include ferns, miniature roses, primroses, and rosemary, to name a few.

Accessories

This is the fun bit. Decorate your fairy garden with miniature houses, stools, tables etc. and let your creativity run wild. Here at Garden Ability, we have a range of fairy themed items, like this Secret Fairy Garden Set, which will be the perfect addition to your fairy garden. Adding things like a tiny fence (ice lolly sticks are the best at making these) and fairy lights will bring even more charm to your fairy garden! Make sure you don’t forget the fairies either – these could be drawn by your grandkids, made from modelling clay, or bought from the shop. It’s a lovely way for children to get involved with something that will have an amazing and creative end result.
